Hit the Road for Bike to Work Day

SF62985LOGO.jpg

Tomorrow, commuters of all stripes will participate in National Bike to Work Day, and numerous East Bay cities will take part.

The League of American Bicyclists reports that more than half of the US population lives within five miles of their workplace. Why not get there on a bike? Oakland in particular has launched an impressive campaign to make our streets safer for cyclists. Take advantage of the new bike lanes, sharrows, and other bike-friendly features our city has to offer.

For Bike to Work Day, Bike East Bay will once again host more than 120 Energizer Stations throughout the East Bay, where they provide information, snacks and a free canvas tote bag. Just for riding your bike! Stop by any time between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at most stations. Click here for a map of Energizer Stations.

If you work downtown, be sure to stop by Frank Ogawa Plaza for a pancake and coffee breakfast, raffle drawings, bike valet parking, and mini-tuneups and safety checks.

After work, celebrate your two-wheeled efforts at the Bike Happy Hour parties in Berkeley, Concord, Oakland, and Alameda. Click here for details.

If you are new to bicycle commuting, keep a few things in mind to ride safe and happy:

• Wear a helmet. It's common sense.

• Pump your tires and make sure your brakes work.

• Bring a U-Lock and cable to lock your frame and both wheels to the bike rack.

• If riding after dark, bring a headlight and rear flashing light.

• Ride predictably, in the bike lane if there is one.

• Stop at red lights. Again, common sense!

• Be aware. Even on a bike holiday, motorists don't always think to watch for cyclists. The more cyclists on the road, the safer you are, but don't assume that a car sees you when it's making a left- or right-hand turn.

Amazingly, the weather calls for rain tomorrow morning. Don't let May showers derail your bike-to-work plans! Put on the rain gear and go!
