Prepare for a safe cycling season

Spring brings the beginning of cycling season. Unfortunately, this usually leads to an increase in collisions with motor vehicles and sometimes fatal accidents.

Proper preparation can aid in decreasing the chances of injury while out on the road. Here are a few things you should do to protect yourself this cycling season.

Observe general safety

There are general safety measures in place for a reason. By analyzing studies and behavioral patterns, the safety administration has been able to identify the various actions that increase the chance of injury, as well as ways to protect against such actions. While wearing a helmet and safety gear, and putting reflectors on your bike and person, may not be enough to thwart all dangerous conditions, they can help to decrease the chances of an accident or fatal injuries.

Be watchful

There is a saying that one should be a defensive driver, and watch out for the actions of other drivers. The same is true for you as a cyclist. To avoid collisions with negligent motorists, you can be mindful of certain negligent acts that can lead to accidents. Some of the most common actions to watch out for include the following:

  • Drivers backing out of driveways
  • Drivers opening their doors or exiting street parking
  • Drivers trailing too close or cutting off bikers

In staying aware of these common driver mistakes, you may be able to identify and avoid such accidents.

Be deliberate

While road hazards can prove to be dangerous to all, they can be especially hazardous and possibly fatal for cyclists. Being deliberate about the routes you take cannot only help to increase safety, but also save you time and energy. Plan your routes to avoid any usual congestion, construction or other hazards.

Though drivers have a level of duty as well, taking extra precaution to protect yourself can only benefit you. Consider other ways you can remain safe while enjoying the cycling season.
